the intention is still based on my first impression about new york yankees’ new stadium, which will have more luxury suite rooms and lounges, but i am focusing more on fantasy approach towards the architecture of a luxury stadium tower and its environment.

what the drawings show is manhattan-like skyscrapers with strange pipe-structure coming out from it, and a tower surrounded by floating structures. These drawings show futuristic, totally fantasy architecture that ignores reality or possibility of building process; the drawings are not actual proposal for construction but an idea that shows the direction for the baseball culture.

2nd presentation focuses more on the architecture, rather than the dissapointment of losing the current yankee stadium. these 2 drawings/sketches show fantasy, futuristic idea on the yankee stadium’s architecture, as the stadium is designed to built of the top of a luxury residential tower, and the tower itself is designed to be built in the middle of the water between manhattan and staten island. the tower is easily accessed by elevated highways.

I’m not sure if I’m sold on the critique of the new stadium as ignoring history. The attachment to physical monuments is a very western, egocentric desire for immortality. The current stadium (due to the renovation in the 70′s) doesn’t seem to hold much in terms of nostalgia or history.

One thing I like about the current plan is the idea that the dirt from the old outfield will be brought in for use in the new outfield. The Stadium was also designed in homage to the original 1923 design. I wonder if Jumpei has any plans to add any historical references to his design.

If anything Jumpei’s plan (and the current new plan) reflects the state of MLB as a business model. A great team is created by the team that can pay the highest salaries. The great team assembled of all stars then attracts lucrative endorsements for the franchise and individual players.

I find the idea of super speed highways from the more affluent suburbs funny, but question whether there would be a market for luxury condos. After all, it is in the Bronx (and it’s not even Riverdale, and has a view of I-87 (an ugly mass of concrete highway ramps). I know this project is fantasy, but it should be acknowledged that Yankee stadium (new or old) brings jobs and an economy to an area that otherwise would most likely remain fairly depressed as much of the South Bronx was throughout the 70′s through 90′s.

It’s sort of like a Disney-revived Las Vegas hotel. A residence and mall in one, where you never have to venture into fresh air for anything- movies, shopping etc.
